2010 Update & National Championships

The 2009 / 2010 curling season has come to a conclusion – with the provincial championships in Moosomin and the 51stCanadian Championships in Regina. The 2009 Canadian champions Jeff Gartner and his rink of Bernie Bandur, Paul Comfort, and Chris Ruggrepeated as provincial champions. The Regina foursome finished at the national championships with a Bronze medal. British Colombia’s Dean Thulin defeated Northern Ontario in the final to receive the Gold medal.

Dale Nixon and his volunteer’s from the Moosomin Fire Department hosted the 2009 / 2010 provincial championships. These championships once again provided a excellent venue to stage our provincial championships. It goes without saying – “thank you” for our members stepping up and accepting the challenge of hosting.

The S.F.F.C.A. has the on going saga of lagging memberships and the daunting task of fundraising to keep our association viable. With a membership of 40 to 50 members we cannot sustain the level of support as set out in our constitution.

The 2010 / 2011 championships will be hosted by the Swift Current Fire Department. The dates for these provincial championships will be November 19th, 20th and 21st, 2010. As was discussed at the annual meeting there will be an additional format at this year’s provincial. There will be the championship event as well as a fun side – if there is enough interest to provide this venue. The fun side will be open to anyone (member or non member of the S.F.F.C.A.) who wished to enter a team in this bonspiel, but will not compete for the provincial championship. There will updates throughout the summer and fall as the date draw closer.

Over the past year the S.F.F.C.A. once again saw sponsorship dollars from the following:

-Yara

-Richards Beauty and Esthetics

-Acklands Grainger

-Moosehead Breweries

The S.F.F.C.A. have 2 fund raisers under way for the 2010 / 2011 curling season. The first is our annual “Beer for a Year” draw – 52 dozen Mooseheadproducts to the winner of the draw. The tickets are currently being distributed to the membership throughout the province. The second fund raiser is a bus trip to Minneapolis: to National Football League and Major League Baseball game.

The S.F.F.C.A. & the Regina Fire Fighters Curling Assocation  were the hosts for the 51st C.F.F.C.C. here in Regina and at the end of the 10 day championships it proved to be as successful off the ice as it was on the ice.  B.C. won the national championship with a 10 victory over Northern Ontario.  Muscular Dystrophy was presented a cheque for over $20,000.00 from the fund raising efforts over the ten days.
